WE ARE HYDRO - CAMEL, THE FIRST ISRAELI TEAM THAT BUILT THE FIRST AUTONOMOUS ROBOTIC SUBMARINE
What is hydro-camel?
We are A group of 20 fourth-year engineering students from Ben Gurion University initiated and established a team which will participate in an international robotics competition from the AUVSI, the Robosub competition. The goal is to build an autonomous submarine, the first of its kind in the country that will meet the future needs of research and underwater services
why robosub?
Today, there are many remotely operated submarines that play an important role in the industries of the ocean, such as checking underwater pipelines, mapping underwater minefields, searching for locations to place communication cables, and searching for sunken vessels. However, it is important to recognize that these marine vessels are limited by effective communication cables and regular contact with a human operator. As such, an autonomous underwater vessel would be an important aid for the above tasks and improve current operations in their effectiveness and accuracy. Accordingly, we assert that there is a need for an autonomous submarine which will be equipped with an intelligent navigation system whose functions include mission planning, obstacle avoidance and decision-making yet none of these would be inferior to a human operator. Moreover, because of this aspiration, after the competition we plan to continue and to further develop the robot and to bring the submarine to actual capabilities, which we hope will place the State of Israel at the forefront in developing tools for marine autonomy, mirroring Israel's previous success in the air.
